Why I Moved to Puerto Rico: A Journey of Identity, Language, and Lifestyle

For years, I questioned my connection to my Puerto Rican roots. I grew up with my Black mother and her family, far from the culture, traditions, and language of my Puerto Rican side. At one point, I even wondered—am I really Puerto Rican?

But after deep research, ancestry DNA tests, and personal discoveries, I knew I wanted to feel more connected. I wanted to immerse myself in the language, embrace the culture, and fully experience what it means to be Puerto Rican. So, I made the move.

Reconnecting with My Puerto Rican Identity

Growing up without exposure to Puerto Rican culture left me feeling disconnected. While I had lived in different places as a military brat, I had never been surrounded by Puerto Rican traditions, family, or even the language. All I had was a very common Spanish last name that always begged lots of questions from people I’d meet.

Despite taking Spanish in high school and college, living in Panama, and maintaining a 400-day Duolingo streak, I never felt truly fluent—especially in the Puerto Rican dialect. Moving here was my way of finally closing that gap.

Seeking a Slower, More Fulfilling Lifestyle

Before Puerto Rico, I spent eight years in Washington, D.C., and Maryland. I loved the diversity, but the hustle-and-bustle culture wore me down.

  • I was constantly working multiple jobs.

  • My calendar was always full.

  • The cost of living kept me in a cycle of endless bills.

  • Social life felt more like networking than genuine connection.

All of this led to chronic stress, panic attacks, hair loss, and difficulty losing weight. My body was holding onto stress, and I knew something had to change.

As someone who had already lived in several states, I wanted somewhere new—somewhere that aligned with my personal goals of identity, language immersion, and a slower pace of life.

Making the Move

Moving to Puerto Rico wasn’t just about leaving behind a stressful lifestyle. It was about creating a life where I could:

✅ Immerse myself in Puerto Rican culture and language.
✅ Connect with a part of my identity I had never fully experienced.
✅ Build deeper, more meaningful relationships.
✅ Prioritize my well-being in a place that felt aligned with my values.

Now that I’m here, I’m documenting the entire journey—the highs, the challenges, and everything in between.
